The union representing locked-out transit Codiac Transpo bus workers and the City of Moncton will return to the negotiating table Tuesday.

The lockout began June 27 when about 80 members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1290 were shut out.

"There is no choice. It has to be put behind us. We have to move forward, said George Turple, president of the ATU.

"We're professionals and we're capable of doing that. That's what we do for a living, and that's what ATU is all about, is, you know, transit, promoting transit and advocating for transit. So, we as professionals will look at this as being resolved and we'll move forward. And that's the one thing that we can offer the City of Moncton is a professional workforce and we can get the job done."

Mediation talks between the City of Moncton and Codiac Transpo broke off July 10 with no resolution.

In August, the ATU said the contract dispute could be over if the city would agree to binding arbitration.

However, the city is not willing to go into arbitration.

The same provincial mediator who has been in place for the other talks will return for this round.

The city's last offer contained a 13.75 per cent wage increase over five years, which would have brought a bus driver's annual salary to $51,000 in 2015.

The transit workers have been without a contract since 2010.

Codiac Transpo serves Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe.
