Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Charlo lawyer Paul McIntyre as New Brunswick’s newest senator Friday.

McIntyre was one of five people newly appointed to the Senate.

This isn't the Charlo lawyer's first foray into politics. He tried to win a seat in the 2003 provincial election when he ran in the northern riding of Dalhousie-Restigouche East to replace the riding MLA Dennis Furlong.

However, McIntyre lost by 400 votes to Liberal Donald Arseneault.

McIntyre was the senior partner in the McIntyre Law Firm in Dalhousie until 2008. He is an active community volunteer.

His appointment is effective immediately.

New Brunswick has 10 senators. McIntyre is Harper's fifth Senate appointment since he became prime minister.

Harper said in a statement that all of the new senators have pledged to support the federal government in making the “Senate more democratic and accountable.”

"I look forward to working with these talented individuals," Harper said in a statement.

"Their skills and experience will help to further advance our shared goals of jobs, growth and long-term prosperity for all Canadians."

The other new senators named on Friday include:

• Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario
• Thanh Hai Ngo, Ontario
• Thomas Johnson McInnis, Nova Scotia
