The Canadian men's wheelchair basketball team defeated Japan in opening round play at the Paralympic Games in London Thursday with the help of New Brunswick native Dave Durepos.
Durepos, of Fredericton, entered the game with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
He scored a three-point basket early in the fourth quarter and another two on a fast break for a total of seven points.
The final score was 68 to 53.
Canada's next game is Friday evening against Great Britain.
Durepos, 44, has said these games will be his fifth and final shot for gold because he plans to retire.
Durepos already has two gold medals and one silver from previous games — Australia in 2000, Athens in 2004 and a Beijing in 2008 respectively.
He has been a wheelchair basketball player for nearly 20 years and has been on the national team since 1994.
He is considered one of the world's best outside shooters in wheelchair basketball.
A motorcycle accident in 1988 left him without the use of his legs.
Durepos hopes to continue to coach.
