The federal government is investing nearly $300,000 in crime prevention in New Brunswick, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews announced in Saint John on Monday.

The funding will support the provincial Equipping for Crime Prevention project, giving crime prevention professionals the resources they need to reduce crime involving at-risk youth, chronic offenders and aboriginal people, he said.

Toews made the announcement from Saint John MP Rodney Weston's constituency office, following a meeting with local stakeholders to discuss the government's crime prevention efforts.

"Today’s discussion will help our government continue to move forward in its goal of keeping Canadians safe," Toews said in a statement.

"Our government has made strong progress in helping keep Canadian streets and communities safe, thanks in part through its close collaboration with law enforcement partners, governments at all levels, and other stakeholders."

The funding will be provided through the Crime Prevention Action Fund, Toews said.
