The Boyce Farmers' Market in Fredericton is changing its garbage pickup day from Monday to Saturday in order to be a better neighbour to the people who live around the popular site.

Some have been complaining for years about the smell coming from the market's three dumpsters. Garbage thrown in the dumpster during the Saturday market wasn’t being picked up until Monday morning.

Mike Baldwin, a board member for the market, said the board is also considering longer-term solutions.

"Our intent is to continue doing this for the remainder of the season, the warmer months and then at the same time we're going to look at longer term solutions,” he said.

He said the board is being strategic in weighing its options beyond the hot weather months.

“Could we mitigate some of the garbage that are going into the dumpsters, some of the perpetrators, the types of garbage that would smell the worst?” he said.

Baldwin said the dumpsters will be picked every Saturday for the rest of the summer. The board is also looking into deodorants and moving the dumpsters to another side of the building during the winter.

Baldwin said the board has been aware of the issue for some time but the warm weather forced immediate action.

"After the past couple of weeks and a perfect storm of beautiful weather I think the issue had peaked so what we've done - we've taken immediate action to have the garbage taken out each Saturday,” he said.

The Fredericton market has more than 250 vendors selling products from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday.
