Seat belts and air bags are being credited with preventing life-threatening injuries in a head-on crash in central P.E.I. Monday.

The accident occurred in North Tryon on the Trans-Canada Highway. RCMP said an SUV with P.E.I. plates crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a car from New Brunswick.

None of the four adults or two children in the vehicles suffered life-threatening injuries, but five were sent to hospital.

Police are still investigating and so far haven't laid any charges, but did say it's a great example of the importance of seatbelts and air bags.
