A promoter wants to see MMA in Saint John. (CBC)A promoter is hoping to convince city councillors to bring mixed martial arts to Saint John.
Edward Hoyt said he's bought $2 million liability insurance to cover a Sept. 22-23 MMA event at the Lord Beaverbrook Arena, which he has already booked. "We have tentatively booked the LBR for the 22nd and 23rd of September," Hoyt said.
But the city will have to agree before the event can go ahead.
"Pro fighters are pro fighters. What we're trying to do is legitimize amateur sports in New Brunswick that do mixed martial arts," Hoyt said.
Hoyt asked common council on Monday to allow amateur MMA events in the city.
Coun. Greg Norton said he is all for making Saint John more competitive, but he feels the city needs more information before allowing a competition in the city.
"They're certainly some grey areas," Norton said. "I think it's incumbent on us to go ahead and unearth what some of the risks may be with holding events such as mixed martial arts at some of our city-owned facilities."
Council has forwarded the proposal to the city solicitor to go over the legality of hosting an event.
Hoyt also petitioned Saint John to form a governing body such as the one in Moncton, where MMA events are sanctioned by the Moncton Boxing and Wrestling Commission.
