Two men from Moncton have been fined more than $138,000 each for possession of illegal cigarettes.

Adam Wilson, 44, and Kenneth Chiasson, 25, were each found guilty on three charges in Moncton provincial court on Tuesday.

The charges stem from an incident in February in northern New Brunswick, RCMP Sgt. Alain Lang stated in a news release.

Officers were conducting a traffic operation on the Trans-Canada Highway in Edmundston when they intercepted two vehicles, he said.

About 200,000 illegal cigarettes were seized from each vehicle, Lang said.

The cigarettes and the vehicles used to transport them were forfeited to the Crown.
