A three-year contract between Ambulance New Brunswick and a Grand Manan charter company was reached last night.

The owner of Atlantic Charters, Klaus Sonnenberg, says he is now required to fly with two pilots and is responsible for the majority of patient transfers off the island.

"The biggest change is that the decision as to how patients are moved will be made more locally and I think more appropriately for patient care,” he said.

Sonnenberg had been flying patients off the island for 30 years.

But on July 1, a contract between his company and the province's ambulance service ended.

At the request of the village council, Health Minister Madeleine Dubé was called in to restore the contract.

Some Islanders had reported waiting several hours for Ambulance New Brunswick's AirCare plane, stationed in Moncton.

In one instance, an 86-year-old woman died from a second heart attack while waiting four hours to be air lifted to Saint John.
