An early Monday morning fire destroyed a 20 by 25-metre barn on Nowland Road in Elgin, part of Albert County.

Garry Steeves, Elgin’s fire chief, said that the barn was fully engulfed and about to cave in when firefighters arrived. He received the call at approximately 1:45 a.m.

No one was injured in the blaze.

"There was a few chickens I guess in the barn and a few rabbits - that's all that was there. The house was quite nearby so we had to concentrate on that quite a lot to save that," Steeves said.

In all, 22 firefighters were on scene, 11 from Elgin and 11 from Petitcodiac.

Steeves said an electrical problem caused the fire.
