Police have someone in custody following a fatal shooting that occurred last night at the intersection of Leinster and Pitt streets.
A 31-year-old man, who has been identified by police, was found dead on the street around 8 p.m.
"It has been determined that a handgun was used and several rounds of ammunition were fired off," according to a Saint John police news release.
"The investigation to date clearly indicates that this was not a random act and that the victim and the suspect were known to each other."
No charges have been laid, according to Sgt. Mike Smith, and he doesn't expect charges before Monday morning.
Multiple witnesses told the CBC's Matthew Bingley they heard several shots just before 8 p.m.
One neighbour said when he went outside, he saw someone lying on the street, not moving.
Another witness said she heard the shots, and saw the coroner attending the scene.
There were no other reported injuries.
The street in front of a clubhouse belonging to the Bacchus Motorcycle Club has been re-opened, but both the front of the club and the site at the corner of Leinster and Pitt streets were to be under guard overnight.
The victim's name isn't being released until next of kin are notified.
