One hundred top athletes from 15 countries are in Moncton to compete in Thursday's Hub City Track and Field Classic at the Moncton Stadium.

The meet is the fourth of six stops along Canada's National Track League circuit and is the last chance for some athletes to qualify of the 2012 London Olympics.

Nova Scotia athletes Geoff Harris and Jenna Martin have already claimed spots on the Olympic track team. Harris, from Halifax, is currently the number one ranked 800 metre male runner in Canada. Martin, from Bridgewater, is the reigning Canadian 400 metre female champion. Both are scheduled to run in Moncton as of the July 3 registration list for the meet.

Peter Stuart and other volunteers are busy getting ready for the event.

He said the stadium on the Université de Moncton campus is an excellent venue.

"The stadium was the major selling point because it is a world class stadium and probably the fastest track we have in the country," Stuart said.

Lakadron Ivery from San Antonio Texas is hoping the speedy track will help her get a spot on the American Olympic team for the 100 metre dash.

"I'm looking to go ahead and get the A standard today which will have me qualify for the games," Ivery told CBC News.

Melissa DeLeon from Trinidad and Tobago is also looking for a fast time in the 800 metres.

"I'm the national champion and record holder there but I don't have much competition there," DeLeon explained, "So I'm using all the competitions I can get to from now until (July 8), which is the cutoff for the Olympics."

This is the second year for the Hub City Classic and organizers said this will become an annual event.

Action got under way Thursday morning with the Maritime age class challenge. It featured at least 150 Maritime middle school and high school students competing in a variety of events.

The evening invitational begins at 6:30 p.m.
