A Fredericton company is developing a set of smart golf clubs that it believes will help show players how to improve their game.

Smart Skin Technologies has patented a pressure-sensitive material and is applying it to the grip of golf clubs. The innovative clubs can help players track the pressure of their grip on the club, said Terry Hashimoto, the director of sales for Smart Skin Technologies.

Red, yellow and green lights illustrate where golfers are applying pressure on their putter.

"This technology adds a new dimension in golf analytics and allows you to measure how you interface with your club because that's probably one of the most important things that you're doing," said company CEO Kumaran Thillainadarajah, who founded the company while studying at the University of New Brunswick.

Sensors inside the club's grip can also monitor the angle and speed of the swing.

"We can track the movement of the club in real time. Which is very useful for a training system, to see exactly what you're doing throughout the entire swing and then go back to any point in your swing and analyse the calculated values at any point," said Adam MacDonald, the company's project manager.

The company plans to have a prototype to show to golf club manufacturers by the end of July.
