New Brunswick’s cross-country ski team is in its final preparations for the Canadian Special Olympics that start next week in Alberta.
This year, the team is hoping Dan Lavigne, the team’s high-profile coach, could offer them a big advantage.
Lavigne recently found out he will be the head coach of Team Canada's cross-country ski team at the Special Olympics in Korea next year.
Denise Godin, a team member, said knowing that her coach is thought of as one of the best in Canada gives her a huge confidence boost.
“We'll probably have a good advantage this year because a couple of years ago I was nervous except this year I'm more confident,” she said.
Right now, Lavigne is focusing his attention on team New Brunswick and the gold medals he expects the team will bring home at the end of the upcoming games.
Lavigne said he expects nothing but the best from his athletes. He said pushes them to compete because he knows they can win.
“I demand high effort, a lot of effort from my athletes. And it's surprising because they do produce. All you need to do is give them courage and training,” he said.
The games will be held in St. Albert from Feb. 28 to March 3.
