Elisabeth Ruth Fellows disappeared on Jan. 25. (Fredericton Police)A memorial has been set up on the north bank of the St. John River in Fredericton, where the body of Elisabeth (Beth) Ruth Fellows was discovered on Sunday.
The Fredericton Police have confirmed the body was that of Fellows, a 41-year-old mother who had been missing for several weeks.
An autopsy is scheduled. The major crime unit is continuing to investigate the cause of death.
Police said on Monday that they have not ruled out foul play.
Meanwhile, Fellows is being remembered fondly by several people who stopped by the scene on Tuesday to leave flowers and stuffed animals.
"A very nice, kind person," said Dale McGivney. "We are going to come here tomorrow, me and my girlfriend, we are going to put some flowers there," he said.
Missing for 26 days
Fellows disappeared on Jan. 25 after being captured on video surveillance shopping at Devon Park Plaza.
Police and her family and friends have been searching for her ever since.
Her body was first spotted by a person walking along the river behind the Devon Park Plaza on Sunday, about 4:30 p.m.
Her body was removed late on Monday night, after a special team was brought in to warm the scene so it could be processed.
Police remained on the scene Tuesday, removing the equipment that helped free her body from the ice and snow.
"Our officers were on the scene this morning, provided a final sweep by forensic officers, but at this point I believe the scene has been cleared," said Const. Rick Mooney.
Police believe Fellows' body, found in a wooded area at the base of a steep embankment, had been there for several weeks, but was missed during the initial search of the area.
"There was an extensive search in that area, but again this is winter and we do have winter conditions, snow on the ground, so certainly there has been a change in weather over the last week, which obviously led to the discovery," said Mooney.
