Two communities in eastern New Brunswick are questioning the latest population figures that were released by Statistics Canada last week.

People in Saint-Léolin near Caraquet were shocked to learn that their population had diminished by more than 30 per cent in five years.

The population numbers show the northeastern community's population dropped to 388 from 733 between 2006 and 2011.

Meanwhile in Point-Sapin, north of Kouchibouguac, many are surprised that the population has grown by 16 per cent.

Statistics Canada has agreed to review its findings.

The head of quality and analysis acknowledges there are sometimes errors despite the care taken by those gathering data.

The population figures from the census were released on Wednesday. New Brunswick's population now stands at 751,171 in 2011 up from 729,997 in 2006.
