A parking shortage at The Moncton Hospital is frustrating some employees who may soon have no place to park.

The hospital currently rents 150 spaces at the l'Université de Moncton as overflow parking for employees who don’t have a spot near the facility.

Hospital employees park at the university and ride a shuttle to work.

But with a growing number of students and contractors at the hospital, the overflow parking can no longer accommodate everyone who needs a spot and some people will be losing their parking passes, effective Feb. 22.

“The university had realized that we're using 180 and 190 and we're only paying 150,” said Walter Shirley, the manager of security and parking services for the hospital.

“So the question then became, ‘Do you have enough money in your budget to pay for the 180 and 190?’ And of course the answer is no, we have no new monies. So we had to scale that back and only use what we're allotted to use,” he said.

Robert Pert said he’s worried his wife, a casual hospital employee who has been using the free off-site parking at the university for years, won’t be issued a new decal.

If she’s not, he’ll have to drive her in from their home in Shediac every day, he said.

"The thing is, it affects us economically,” said Pert. “And it's quite a thing not to be able to afford to work."

First come, first served

A memo to all staff, dated Feb. 9, said off-site parking privileges will end for all students and contractors, as well as some staff. New decals will be provided to staff members who currently park at the university, based on the date they applied for parking.

Those who applied first will be given first rights for a space at the university lot, it states.

Anyone who doesn’t get a spot will be placed on a waiting list and spaces will be assigned as they become available.

Meanwhile, staff are being encouraged to car pool, or use public transportation.

The memo also states that free courtesy parking passes for outside commitments, such as medical or dental appointments will now be restricted to registered shuttle users only.
