Two developers are expressing interest in taking over Fredericton's historic York House.
The developers, one commercial and one residential, are looking at taking ownership of the building, which was first built in 1893.
The city bought the former school from Brunswick Street Baptish Church in 2007 to save it from being demolished.
Fredericton spends $40,000 a year on heat and upgrades for York House.
While the developers have expressed interest in the building, so far, Coun. Stephen Chase said there have been no talks with either company. Chase said the city has outlined its conditions for any development.
"We basically set two parameters, one being that we want the exterior architecture preserved or brought back to its original state. And the other, we would like to remove the burden of York House from the taxpayers of Fredericton," Chase said.
Chase said the city has no timetable for any deal on developing York House.
The building was designed by James C. Dumaresq, the same architect who designed New Brunswick's legislative assembly.
Over the years, York House has served as a school, teachers' college, library and youth hostel before being purchased by the church in 1965.
