Three people were killed in two separate highway crashes in New Brunswick on Saturday, police say.
Two people were killed in a three vehicle collision on Highway 11 in Napan just before noon Saturday, District 5 RCMP spokesman Sgt. Jeff Johnston said in release.
A 20-year-old man from Saint-Sauveur and an 18-year-old woman from Tracadie-Sheila died at the scene, Johnston said.
Police believe that the victims were driving southbound on Highway 11 when their car collided head on with a van driving northbound, he said.
A third vehicle, a pick-up truck, which was also travelling southbound, then collided with the victims' car.
The lone occupant of the van, a man from Quebec, as well as three people in the pick-up truck, all from Atholville, N.B., were taken to hospital by ambulance with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries, Johnston said.
Road conditions may have been a contributing factor , he said, as the roads were slippery and snow covered at the time of the crash.
Highway 11 remained closed to traffic for several hours while RCMP investigators and a collision reconstructionist investigate the collision.
The names of the victims will not be released until their families have been notified. The investigation is continuing.
Oromocto woman killed
An 18-year-old woman from Oromocto died at the scene of a crash on Highway 2 near Oromocto at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.
It appears the victim was merging on the westbound lane when she lost control of her vehicle and was hit by a tractor trailer also heading westbound, District 2 RCMP Cpl. Alain Desrosier said in a release.
The passenger in the victim's vehicle was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The transport truck driver was not hurt, he said.
Roads were icy and snow covered at the time of the crash, Desrosier said.
The name of the victim was not released. The investigation is continuing.
