Most rooming house residents in downtown Fredericton are expected to be back at home Thursday night despite a fire earlier in the day.

The fire broke out at 72 Regent St., about 3:30 p.m., disrupting rush-hour traffic.

The 45-unit building was evacuated.

No one was hurt, but about 45 people were temporarily displaced.

Traffic was blocked for a couple of hours between King and Queen streets, one of the accesses to the Westmorland Bridge.

The fire was quickly brought under control and contained to one room, but there was extensive water damage from the sprinkler system.

Power to the building was also shut off, affecting several businesses on the ground floor.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
