Northern New Brunswick may be facing a “weather bomb” on Thursday as the region could be hit by 25 centimetres of snow and high winds, according to a CBC meteorologist.

Environment Canada has issued wind and heavy snowfall warnings for northern New Brunswick.

An intense low pressure system is expected to move in overnight and cause some severe weather on Thursday.

Kalin Mitchell, a CBC meteorologist, said the weather system that's moving toward New Brunswick is referred to as “a weather bomb.”

“Basically what it comes down to is it's a low-pressure system that deepens, it becomes more powerful very rapidly within a 24-hour time span. And that's what we have on the way for the Maritimes for Thursday,” Mitchell said.

Many New Brunswick communities have been enjoying record high temperatures in recent days. But the northern half of the province will be confronting some traditional New Brunswick winter weather on Thursday.

The north could get 15 to 25 centimetres of snow, which would begin falling in the morning and early afternoon.

As well, Mitchell said visibility in northern New Brunswick will be very poor on Thursday with the high winds and snow.

“We have these winds and the wind warnings right now that stretch the entire eastern coastline of New Brunswick, so running from the Northumberland Strait all the way up to the Acadian Peninsula,” he said.

“Right now, wind gusts up to 100 km/h are being called for.”

The winds are expected to peak Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, southern New Brunswick may escape the weather bomb.

Mitchell said southern New Brunswick will get rain, which will be heavy at times.
