Wedding staged in student loan protest

Students at L' Universite de Moncton staged a fake wedding Wednesday to protest the parental contribution rule in student loan funding.
The province considers a parent's income before giving out student loans, even if that parent is not providing any money for the student's education.
Getting married is one way to be declared independent from parents, so it's easier to qualify for a student loan.
Parental contributions were eliminated in 2007 and brought back last spring.
Liberal leader Victor Boudreau was at the fake wedding along with the opposition critic for Post-Secondary Education Training and Labour, Chris Collins.
"We're asking government to get rid of this requirement for a parental contribution," said Collins. "We're asking them to go back to the old way so the students in New Brunswick have the opportunity to attend post-secondary education and not have this barrier in place of accessing a loan.
The fake wedding organizers say more than 4,500 New Brunswick students lost all or part of their student loans since the re-introduction of parental contributions last spring.
