Community members in Moncton are pulling together to support an injured taxi driver, who has been in hospital since he was attacked during a robbery last week.

Wayne Horn was assaulted and robbed with a weapon on Nov. 23 in a parking lot of a gas station in Riverview. He managed to get away, but sustained serious injuries to his upper body.

Two teenagers have been charged with attempted murder and theft in connection with the attack.

The local cabbie community has rallied to raise money for Horn, to cover what he has been missing since he's been off the job.

"Cab drivers are independent contractors. If you don't work, you don't make any money," said Greg Estabrooks, a cab driver as well as the chairman of the Moncton Taxi Committee.

"Plus, Wayne is a single parent with two teenage children. This close to Christmas, it's got to be hitting hard."

A Facebook group discussing the story prompted another man, Tom Jenicek, to also reach out to Horn's family.

Jenicek is heading up some fundraisers and a benefit for Horn — who was a stranger to him before this incident.

"He's actually told me that the efforts that we've done for him so far have really helped in his recovery," Jenicek told CBC News.

"His frame of mind is much more positive."

Jenicek said a trust fund for Horn's family is being set up at TD Canada Trust.

Estabrooks said the violent incident hit home with other cab drivers in the city.

"It makes everybody very leery of who they're picking up," he said.

"Right now there's a shortage of cabs at night, some nights, because some of the older fellas now are afraid to go out at night."
