As of Tuesday night, about 1,900 New Brunswickers were still without power following tropical storm Irene.

High winds blew trees onto lines and sparked transformer fires during the weekend storm, leaving more than 50,000 without electricity at one point.

N.B. Power crews have been working long hours to restore service bringing the number of outages down to just under 7,000 by noon.

By 10 p.m., only Rothesay and Sussex still had sizeable outages, with about 100 customers still without power in Fredericton.

Heather MacLean, spokeswoman for the utility, said 12 crews had come in from out of province to work on the outages.

"Because of the sheer number of separate incidents that we have throughout the province, we are going to be going into tomorrow and possibly into early Thursday morning," predicted MacLean.

N.B. Power's website indicated it hoped to have power restored to most of those customers overnight.

Meanwhile dozens of residents in Oromocto’s west end are cleaning up after flash flooding Sunday.

Mayor Faye Tidd said the fire department received 42 calls from residents and the problems ranged from minor flooding to major damage.

"The assessment they made was that some of them, eight houses, should really have electric inspectors come and take a look. They weren't taking any chances,” he said.

Oromocto was one of the areas heaviest hit by rain with more than 80 millimetres falling during the storm.

Fredericton received 53 millimetres, but the highest was the 89 millimetres that fell in the Doaktown area of central New Brunswick.
