The body of a New Brunswick man who went missing in the water west of Fredericton was recovered Sunday by members of an RCMP dive team.
The 20-year-old man was jumping from the Longs Creek Bridge in the Upper Kingsclear area on Friday afternoon. After one jump into the St. John River, he failed to surface.
District 2 Oromoto RCMP Cpl. Al Vincent said it's not uncommon to see people jumping from the bridge above from where the man was found.
"It is a very popular area. It's one of a few areas in our jurisdiction here that is popular, a number of people attend throughout the summer months to just spend time and jump off the bridge, go for a swim," Vincent said Sunday.
"I think it's only out of luck that there have been no serious or fatal incidents up to this date, but I'm sure there have been some close calls before." The victim is from the Fredericton area. His name was not being released Sunday. An autopsy is planned for Monday, Vincent said.
Police are also investigating the circumstances leading to his death, but do not believe it to be suspicious.
