The Department of Education has closed access to part of St. George Elementary School after it found problems as a part of its structural review of New Brunswick's schools.

Education Minister Jody Carr ordered the review of the 239 schools that were built before 1980 after Moncton High School and Roland-Pépin high school in Campbellton were closed over structural concerns.

Carr said an engineering firm inspecting the St. George school discovered the structural concerns.

"Based on their findings of the gymnasium and stage area of St. George Elementary School, with engineers recommendations, we feel it is prudent to close access to this part of the school as precautionary measures," Carr told the legislative assembly.

The education minister said engineers will be at the school over the next several days to look at the roof, gymnasium and stage areas.

Work to fix the problem areas will be done as soon as possible, Carr said.

St. George Elementary School is a K-6 school in the southwestern town of St. George.

Carr said the structural review is continuing across the province. He said there are 15 schools left to inspect.

The Department of Supply and Services started the school structural review on Feb. 7. The structural review of the schools will cost roughly $900,000.

The provincial government is setting aside a $3-million contingency fund just in case they find repairs that must be done immediately.
