The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce says a foreign air carrier at the Fredericton International Airport would bring in more business to the city. (CBC)The Fredericton Chamber of Commerce is poised to go after the federal and provincial governments to bring in new business through the city's airport.
Susan Holt, the CEO of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, has a list of priorities that she hopes the provincial and federal Conservative governments will address.
At the top of that list — Fredericton's need for a foreign air carrier.
"A large number of our members are servicing customers in the United States, customers in Asia and in Europe, and they need to be in front of those people, so there is a high usage of the airport and a high cost associated with that."
Holt also takes issue with fees charged for air travel, which she said makes flying in Canada more expensive than many other countries.
She said that extra cost hinders trade.
Holt is optimistic her concerns will be recognized by both levels of government and that Fredericton will have a foreign carrier in the near future.
"We've got a lot of support in the business community and I think with Keith Ashfield, as well as with the Alward government, we have a partner in public service that's ready to help, so I bet it's not far around the corner."
Holt said the new federal government could also help businesses by lifting the cap on the number of immigrants who come to Canada under the skilled worker status.
