Four clothing stores in Saint John could face fines for allegedly opening their doors on Boxing Day Sunday.

Under the provincial Days of Rest Act and municipal bylaw, most businesses are supposed to remain closed on statutory holidays.

Sgt. David Arsenault said the Saint John Police Force responded to a complaint about stores being open at East Point Shopping on Fashion Drive.

Randy River, International Clothiers, Fairweather and Urban Planet were all charged with violating the municipal bylaw.

"All those stores have been charged before numerous times and they have a history with the courts, so it's up to the courts to impose the fines as they see fit," Arsenault said.

Those stores, with the exception of Urban Planet, were fined $2,000 each earlier this month for being open on Thanksgiving and Labour Day.

The Days of Rest Act dictates which days businesses must close, including Christmas, Good Friday and Canada Day. Exceptions are made for restaurants, pharmacies and some small businesses that sell food products.
