NDP picks ex-candidate as interim leader

Jesse Travis has been selected to serve as the interim NDP leader until the spring leadership convention is held. (Photo submitted)Jesse Travis has been selected as New Brunswick's NDP interim leader as the party prepares for a full leadership convention next spring.
Travis, a defeated candidate in the provincial election and a law student at the University of New Brunswick, was picked to take the on interim position in Moncton on Sunday.
Travis placed a distant third in New Maryland-Sunbury West in the fall election.
The NDP will be holding its full leadership convention on April 16, 2011.
Travis is replacing on an interim basis Roger Duguay, who left politics suddenly in October.
Duguay, a former Catholic priest, took the party to the middle of the political spectrum and doubled the party's share of the popular vote in the 2010 election compared to 2006.
Duguay, however, was unable to win his seat in Tracadie-Sheila. The NDP has been without a seat in the legislative assembly since 2005.
