A Quebec soldier who has accused a Fredericton police officer of assaulting him testified at the officer's trial Wednesday.

Luc Begin, a soldier from Valcartier, Que., was teaching at the infantry school at CFB Gagetown when he was arrested while off duty outside a downtown Fredericton nightclub in July 2009.

Const. Stephen Stafford is accused of using excessive force during the arrest.

Begin told the court he had four or five drinks before he and his friends arrived at Sweetwaters nightclub. He said he was approached by two police officers after he was turned away from the bar.

Officers said a bouncer had recognized Begin from an incident the week before where someone had jumped up and down on a police cruiser, Begin said.

Begin said he told them he knew nothing of that incident, but the two officers led him toward a cruiser. He testified a third officer came up from behind him and kicked him in the calf, bringing him to the ground.

Begin told the court he does not remember what happened next, but that blows were coming from everywhere and his head struck the ground. He said he was kneed in the back and lost consciousness at one point.

Begin said he went to hospital after being released from jail and found he had two fractured vertebrae.

Part of the incident was captured on video by local blogger Charles LeBlanc and posted on YouTube.

The trial continues.
