How you can help

The Red Cross in Atlantic Canada says it's often more difficult to raise funds to help victims of floods, which may be affecting donations to Pakistan.

Fourteen million people have been affected by monsoon flooding in Pakistan over the past few weeks. But the Red Cross in Atlantic Canada says fundraising for flood victims has been slower than for other disasters such as earthquakes.

Bill Lawlor, the director of disaster management and international programs with the Canadian Red Cross in Atlantic Canada, said many Canadians may not realize the severity of flooding and its impact.

"Certainly floods have been typically less successful, if you will, than other types of events where we have raised funds," Lawlor said.

"And I can only speak on behalf of the Red Cross. For some reason, whether it be here in Canada, throughout North America, or indeed around the world, floods are for some reason less likely to generate the revenue in terms of donations."

Lawlor said one reason floods might not attract as many donations is that they happen more frequently than other disasters. He suggests people make a cash donation, which they can do at a Red Cross office, or online.
