Students and administration at St. Thomas University in Fredericton will meet to discuss a policy on putting condoms inside the Welcome Week kits given to first-year students.

'Having a committee to come up with some actual guidelines … to improve sexual education and sexual health on campus is really good.'— Student union president Ella Henry

Student union president Ella Henry said she was initially told it was against university policy to include the condoms, which surprised her, because they're available elsewhere on campus: from residence advisers, proctors and in the Student Union Building.

Henry found out later there is no actual policy, only what the university called a "longstanding practice." The university is revisiting that practice, however.

"The president's going to look at reviving a committee on sexual health and sexual health information, and so he's going to bring together a group of students, faculty and staff who have an interest in this issue," said Jeffrey Carleton, communications director for the university.

"One of the things they'll be looking at is the condoms in the Welcome Week kits."

Henry said the opportunity for discussion is welcome news.

" It's not something that's really been talked about in the university very openly in a number of years," she said.

"I think having a committee to come up with some actual guidelines around how we can work to improve sexual education and sexual health on campus is really good."

Carleton said a final decision on the issue should be made before school starts.
