Three young people are dead and two others are in hospital after a car slammed into a tree in southeastern New Brunswick.
Four of the five people were thrown out of the vehicle in the crash Saturday night on Route 905 in Forest Glen.
Police reported an 18-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were taken to hospital in critical condition.
Sgt. Marco Papillon of the Caledonia RCMP said police still do not know who was driving the vehicle.
"We have to come to a conclusion as far as who was driving," he said, "trying to put back everyone to where they were actually sitting in the vehicle, and go from there."
High schoolers
Papillon said it appears the occupants were not wearing seatbelts and early indications are that speed may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
All five were reportedly from the Riverview, N.B., area and some were former students from Riverview High School, Papillon said.
The school's principal expressed his sadness at the loss on Sunday.
"The first thing that happens is that your thoughts and prayers go out to the family," said Doug Prescott. "Then you begin, as part of your training, to think about what needs to be done to care for students who will arrive the next day and with your staff members."
Prescott said classes will continue Monday and grief counsellors will be available to offer support to students.
The victims' names have not been released.
