New Brunswick Liberal politican T.J. Burke's Pants on the Ground rap has earned him a cameo on the hit reality TV show American Idol.

Burke stood in the provincial legislature last week to criticize Progressive Conservative Leader David Alward — when he suddenly burst into song.

The 16-second performance was Burke's imitation of General Larry Platt, the contestant who composed and performed the original rap on American Idol.

Since Friday, the video of Burke rapping from his legislature desk spread out on several websites, including the entertainment site TMZ.com, and eventually caught the attention of American Idol.

Burke was contacted by an associate producer from the show on Tuesday evening to ask if the U.S. show could use a clip from his rap.

"For Season 9 of American Idol we were interested in using maybe a second or two of the YouTube Pants on the Ground footage," the email stated.

"We are using several popular YouTube videos in a Pants on the Ground montage in an upcoming episode."

The former Liberal cabinet minister's video has received more than 36,000 hits on YouTube. Burke has also been seen on major U.S. television networks such as CNN and Fox News.

Burke was a cabinet minister in Premier Shawn Graham's government until last July, when he resigned after being shuffled to the environment portfolio after several controversies in the Department of Justice.

He is still the member of the legislative assembly for Fredericton-Nashwaaksis.
