Dakencia poses for photos in the Moncton airport on Sunday night after arriving from Haiti. (CBC)There was a joyous reunion at the Greater Moncton International Airport on Sunday night as the Naugler family came home with their two adopted Haitian children.
Gerry and Melissa came through the airport's doors with Dakencia, 9, and Dieulando, 4, and were welcomed by a large crowd of supporters carrying signs and presents.
The Naugler's adoption was completed but the family was waiting for one last travel document when the earthquake hit Haiti almost two weeks ago.
The two children were flown into Ottawa on Sunday morning where their parents were waiting.
Dieulando and Dakencia have now joined the Naugler's other children, Jerrica and Noah, and they're looking forward to their new life in Canada.
Dakencia had already formed an opinion about her new home on Sunday when she spoke with reporters.
"Cold. And I think I'm going to be happy for all the family that's here," Dakencia said.
Family overwhelmed by support
Shortly after landing in Moncton, Dieulando opens presents that were given to him by a large crowd of people who were waiting for he and his sister Dakencia. (CBC)When the earthquake hit, Dakencia and Dieulando were forced out of their orphanage and on to a soccer field where they had rice and water but little else.
Melissa Naugler said it's good to have the kids home and safe.
Gerry Naugler said the family has been overwhelmed by the support they have received.
"This is where the happily ever after comes in. We're just going to come together as a family. We're now a family of six mom and dad and four children," Gerry Naugler said.
Naugler said he's happy the government was able to expedite the adoptions and get the kids to safety.
A plane carrying 24 young Haitians, the first group of children to have their adoptions fast-tracked since the earthquake in Haiti 12 days ago, landed in Ottawa on Sunday.
Along with the Naugler's children, fifteen of the young Haitians are to be settled with families in Quebec, while the rest will travel to destinations in British Columbia and Alberta.
