A Quispamsis, N.B., man says his dog is lucky to be alive after being shot about 40 times at close range with a BB gun.

Al McAlpine discovered the injuries earlier this week after his dog Maggie developed a large growth on her neck.

He said he thought the 11-year-old English Sheep dog might have cancer, but the vet found puncture wounds.

McAlpine wasn't sure his beloved pet would survive.

"Her body was kinda going into shock and she shut down. She was just lifeless," he said.

"It was like a vacant kind of cage was there. There was no soul left in it. You'd try to make eye contact with her and her eyes wouldn't even acknowledge that you were there."

Maggie is now back home with her family recovering from her ordeal.

Rothesay police have questioned people in the area about the incident and continue to investigate.

McAlpine said he hopes those involved in injuring his dog are found.

He's concerned the behaviour could escalate into something more violent, he said.
