More than 13,000 homes across New Brunswick were without power on Halloween night.

High winds were to blame, said NB Power spokeswoman Marianne Limpert.

Just last weekend, about 6,000 homes in the province lost electricity for several hours due to heavy rains that also caused flooding.

As of Sunday morning, crews had successfully restored power to all but about 1,200 customers, Limpert said. By mid-afternoon, the number was down to about 30, according to the NB Power website.

But some of the outages may not be corrected until the evening because they're scattered across the province.

"Because of the number of individual outages, it is going to take a little bit more time to restore power to those customers," Limpert said.

"It's a little more challenging than it would be, say, if there were fewer incidents but the same number of customers.

"In the Bathurst area there were eight outages and 95 customers, so that will take longer because our crews have to respond to each of the eight incidents," she said.

The hardest hit areas were Moncton, Bathurst, Bouctouche and Woodstock.

"Our crews are working to restore power as quickly and as safely to everyone," said Limpert. "We appreciate the patience of our customers."

Strong winds also forced the cancellation of the 4:30 p.m. Bay Ferries crossing from Digby, N.S., to Saint John on Saturday, as well as the 9 a.m. Sunday crossing from Saint John to Digby.
