The legal effort to block a wage freeze for New Brunswick doctors is on hold while the province and the doctors' professional organization talk about a possible settlement.
In a joint statement released Tuesday, the New Brunswick Medical Society and the province said a "mutually agreeable solution is always preferable to litigation."
The case, launched by the doctors' group, was scheduled to go to court Wednesday in Saint John but the two sides requested the date be adjourned in order to pursue discussions.
The provincial government has imposed a two-year wage freeze on all public servants as a way to battle the projected $740-million deficit.
Once the bill is proclaimed, the law would extend the doctors' current contract, which expired in March 2008, to April 2010.
Neither side is commenting publicly.
