A Bathurst elementary school playground is under video surveillance after local parents became frustrated the park had become a constant target of vandals.
Children were still playing at École Cité de l'Amitié's playground last week despite another attack by vandals, leaving burn marks and holes melted into plastic slides and tunnels.
Marc Brochu, president of the school's fundraising committee, finds the destruction very upsetting.
For three years, Brochu's committee worked to raise $125,000 to upgrade the school's playground.
"This is very sad for the parents and the students as well who are frequently using those activities," Brochu said.
"There's so much money involved and also the volunteer [efforts] of those people. It's just breaking our hearts to see that people would do that."
Now Brochu said the school has had to use $10,000 from its playground fund to invest in security cameras.
He hopes the video surveillance, and extra police patrols, will put an end to the damage.
What angers Brochu the most, he said, is the fact that vandals are now destroying new equipment.
"We've had damage before to our playground but this time it's on our new equipment. So it's very frustrating for us to raise that much money and have unfortunately this kind of damage to our playground. It's just disgusting," he said.
