A 15-year-old Moncton boy has died of his injuries after being hit by a train on Thursday morning on Main Street.
The RCMP are investigating the collision that happened just before 6 a.m. at the city's downtown overpass.
Codiac RCMP Const. Chantal Farrah said a group of teens was gathered near the tracks by the overpass when the incident occurred.
The name of the victim has not been released.
Dan Ditota, national director of Operation Lifesaver, a group dedicated to preventing train-pedestrian accidents, said he has tried to impress upon people how dangerous it is walk along train tracks.
"We've approached several people walking along the sides of the tracks and have tried to let them know that it's dangerous and that it's private property and their attitude is: 'Well it's not going to happen to me,' " Ditota said.
"It's always someone else. And I try to tell them, I say, to me you are someone else."
The latest accident comes after two fatal incidents just four days apart in April.
A 16-year-old boy was killed in Sussex, and a woman in her 60s died after being struck while walking along the tracks near Beresford in northern New Brunswick.
Ditota said deaths from train accidents have decreased in recent years across the country but New Brunswick has seen an increase.
