The Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton is making changes to help accommodate patients after a burst water main flooded parts of the Oromocto Hospital last week.

The water main break in Oromocto has forced the closure of the emergency room, causing a possible flood of patients to the Fredericton emergency room.

Officials with Regional Health Authority B say the Oromocto emergency room will be closed until further notice.

Health officials are working to make sure Chalmers can handle the influx of patients.

One change will affect where people go to get checked out after having broken bones set.

The Fredericton hospital's fracture clinic will then be used as an extension of the emergency room.

Dr. Thomas Barnhill, an orthopedic surgeon in Fredericton, said the move worries him.

"It's a big part of our practice. It's a busy and efficient clinic that we run. And it's going to be moved to another location in the Chalmers hospital," Barnhill said.

"And I'm just a little concerned about how that's going to work out."

Barnhill said it's not clear whether the move will cause any delays or inconveniences.

Although the emergency room is closed indefinitely, Oromocto's medical and surgical units affected by the flooding are expected to reopen on Monday.
