New Brunswick RCMP have charged a couple from Moores Mills with concealing the body of a newborn.

Sarah Russell, 19, and Rodney Miller, 27, were arrested by RCMP on Thursday and appeared in provincial court in St. Stephen to face the charge on Friday.

The RCMP are treating the death as a homicide and further charges are anticipated. The alleged offence took place between Jan. 5 and 22, 2009.

Sgt. Claude Tremblay said charges against the common-law couple could change.

"The cause of death hasn't been determined. [The charge] may very well stay what it is right now, but it can definitely be upgraded to first-degree murder later on," Tremblay said.

The couple are being held in custody and will be back in court on Feb. 3 to enter a plea.

Police have not confirmed the baby's gender or exact age.
