Voters in New Maryland-Sunbury West elected Progressive Conservative Jack Carr as their new MLA in a provincial byelection Monday evening.
Carr won 51.1 per cent or 2,494 votes against Liberal candidate Debbie McCann, who had 45.8 per cent or 2,236 votes, according to Elections New Brunswick.
Carr credited his win to voters who were dissatisfied with Premier Shawn Graham's Liberal government over a series of controversial decisions, such as increasing taxes and changing the French immersion program.
"You know they had the power, they had the money, they could have the promises, but what I had was the heart, the determination, and the winning attitude," Carr said. "And what this says is there is discontent for people for Shawn Graham for broken promises."
McCann, who thanked her supporters and told them she'll be back, said the result was a reflection of the riding's Conservative voting tradition.
Carr, who replaces Keith Ashfield, now a federal MP and the minister of state for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, will join his twin brother, Oromocto MLA Jody Carr, in the legislature.
