A New Brunswick judge says there is enough evidence to try a man charged with impaired driving causing death, and the mother of the Moncton teen who died says she's relieved by the decision.
Several witnesses testified during the preliminary hearing in Moncton provincial court for Alexander Beers, 20, of Hillsborough. The hearing concluded on Thursday, but their evidence can't be reported due to a publication ban.
Beers is charged with impaired driving causing the death of Satara Steeves, 14, who was struck by a car in July 2007 while walking along Ryan Road.
Steeves's mother, Annette Steeves, told CBC News she's relieved to know that Beers will go to trial.
Waiting for the case to make its way through the courts has been difficult for the family, she said.
"We're not doing well. They say it gets easier but I think that just comes from people who don't really know. It doesn't get easier."
Beers, who attends university in Nova Scotia, has elected to be tried by judge alone before the Court of Queen's Bench.
A trial date has not yet been set.
