Longtime New Brunswick MLA Keith Ashfield has resigned his position in the legislature to seek the Fredericton seat in the federal election.

Ashfield, 56, who has represented the New Maryland-Sunbury West riding for more than nine years, announced his resignation on Monday. He will be the Conservative candidate in the Fredericton riding in the federal election.

Liberal Andy Scott, who has represented Fredericton since 1993, is not seeking re-election.

At the announcement, Ashfield thanked his provincial constituents, saying it's "been quite a run" while representing the riding.

"I've enjoyed it immensely," he said.

David Innes is the Liberal candidate in the federal riding while Mary-Lou Babineau is the Green party contender.

The New Democrats have not yet chosen a candidate.
