Traffic attempting to cross the Canada-United States border at Woodstock, N.B., was rerouted briefly on Thursday morning following a shooting.

The RCMP said they responded to the shooting at the Woodstock border crossing at approximately 9 a.m.

A car bearing Texas licence plates attempted to cross into Canada when Canadian border officials directed it to drive slightly ahead for a secondary search, said RCMP Sgt. Dave Vautour.

The car drove forward and came to a complete stop and then a shot was heard, Vautour said.

The driver, a 52-year-old man from Spring, Texas, was found dead in the vehicle, Vautour said. He was the lone occupant in the car.

Foul play is not suspected in the incident, Vautour said, but alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

The investigation is ongoing and the RCMP is working with Texas authorities to notify the man's next of kin.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Vautour said that a secondary search of the vehicle could have been ordered by border officials for a variety of reasons.

"If the border guard thought the driver was impaired or if there was further questioning or further search to be conducted, they could ask for a secondary search and, in this case, there was obviously something that triggered the border guard's attention," Vautour said.

A .38-calibre weapon and ammunition were removed from the car. No other contraband was found.

Traffic was flowing through the border crossing via its usual route soon after police arrived at the scene.
