Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside will serve a record-setting seventh term.

Woodside, 60, won Monday's municipal election to remain mayor of New Brunswick's capital city. He beat Tim Andrew, who netted about 3,707 votes, according to unofficial results released by Elections N.B.

Woodside took 9,035 of the ballots. The election win will make him Fredericton's longest-serving mayor.

Woodside was congratulated by a handful of friends as he arrived at a garage on the city's north side shortly after the votes were counted.

"I think people here know my heart is here and I love this city and I give it everything I've got, so all of that together is probably what accounts for a win," Woodside said.

Woodside largely ran his campaign on his experience. He was first elected in 1981 and served as councillor and deputy mayor before being elected mayor in 1986.

Andrew's platform revolved around taxation.

Andrew, a retired civil servant, said he did not feel his loss was in vain and that he had had a respectful showing.

Andrew also said that he had drawn attention to the issue of rising property taxes in the municipality.

Woodside said council will review the issue when it meets again.

The re-elected mayor added that his vision for the future includes the city being more frugal.

"We are in for some tough times. The council over the last four years has invested in strategic infrastructure and spent quite a bit of money," Woodside said. "We are up to 5.8 per cent debt load, the lowest in the province, but still, we have to careful to watch what we are spending and what we are doing in our budget."
