Female candidates are contending for municipal council positions in greater numbers than in 2004, says New Brunswick's chief electoral officer.

There will be 339 women running for office in May's municipal and district education council elections, compared with 271 who ran in the 2004 elections.

"Local government is often the entry point for individuals who have aspirations to consider a career in provincial or federal politics," said Michael Quinn, chief electoral officer. "So it's very encouraging to see the slate of women candidates increase."

Of the female candidates, 30 are seeking a mayor's office.

The total number of candidates running is also greater for 2008. When nominations closed on Friday, 1,063 individuals had put their names forward for council positions, up from 989 in 2004. There were also 165 people seeking to serve on the province's district education council, an increase from 151 in 2004.

"We are very pleased that so many New Brunswickers answer the call and are stepping forward offering to represent the community where they live," Quinn said.

Candidates are still able to withdraw their names from the race on Monday.

The elections are set for May 12.
