Ticket holders expecting to catch a direct flight from Fredericton to Boston over the holidays had better start making alternate plans.
Big Sky Airlines was supposed to continue to provide the service until Jan. 7 but has now changed the official end date for the flight to Dec. 23.
But as of Thursday, planes won't be flying anymore because of operational difficulties, said Fred deLeeuw, spokesman for Big Sky.
"The economics of flying to Fredericton from Boston has never been good for Big Sky," said deLeeuw. "We were losing substantial sums of money."
Big Sky began providing the flights on behalf of Delta Air Lines last year.
It announced in early December that it would be pulling the direct service from the Fredericton International Airport because of operational and economic difficulties related to the cost of oil.
Would-be passengers should contact Delta to rebook their flights or get refunds, deLeeuw said.
About 75,000 seats have been sold since Delta began offering the flight in 2003.
There is a need for a direct flight to the American city, said David Innes, CEO for the Greater Fredericton Airport Authority, and the airport is searching for an alternate service provider.
