Transit riders in New Brunswick's capital city are now just a few clicks away from finding their best bus route.

Fredericton Transit has joined with Google to offer a mapping service that allows transit riders to not only map out their routes, but to get walking route suggestions and projected durations of their trips at different times in the day.

Launched on Monday, the transit website allows users to enter where they want to go and when and then uses Google's map technology to show the best route on Fredericton Transit as well as alternate routes and times.

Fredericton is the first city in Atlantic Canada to utilize the web technology. Vancouver and Montreal started using Google Maps earlier this year.

"This is a smart technology for a smart city," said Coun. Marilyn Kerton, chair of the city's transportation committee.

Readying the map service began in the summer and required the city to convert all its schedule data and route maps into a format compatible with Google.

Fredericton has seven bus routes that run six days a week.

The 28-bus fleet transports about one million passengers annually.
